Car Safety Trends in India

Most modern cars are already safe enough. Automobile industry is constantly striving for building safer cars and is also a result of safety evolutions. Modern cars are made safer than ever before by modern computer with extensive experience in designing, equipment and regulations to minimize the crash incidence and its consequences. How car safety have evolved from just metal boxes to what we have today, let us understand.

Vintage Car Drawing

Early cars were also equipped with safety features like brakes and lights. Those cars were not manufactured for high speed. Brakes were just a wooden stick. Then crash avoidance systems were used by companies which included mirrors, reflectors and signal lights. Hand operated windscreen wipers were installed in cars, Electric windscreen wipers offered in 1926.

Research and development from World War was used in automobile manufacturing such as infrastructure and improved materials that made the car stronger.

Car safety glass introduced in all Ford cars as standard feature to protect passengers. During 30s and early 40s Era, Companies like Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge added features like rounded door handles, Rubber windscreen wiper. Standard disc brakes were first introduced in 1949. Ford introduced optional lap belts. Anti-Lock braking system was invented in 1958 to make braking more efficient and faster. Volvo introduced three point safety belts in 1959 which was a major breakthrough in history of automobile safety.

Toyota Rear Brake Light

In 1960s, Padded dashboard was installed in car to reduce face and chest injuries during crash. Head restrain used for front and rear passenger seat to protect occupants from whiplash in rear-end collision. Car companies build a super strong cabin while designing front and rear section to withstand as much impact as possible. Crash dummies were borrowed from aerospace industry. These dummies measured the force of collision and this showed that the car cabin was sufficiently strong but the controls on the occupants were not and this leads to introduction of passive restraints or Airbag.

New car assessment program was also introduced in 70s. 1978 Mercedes-Benz became first car company to install four wheel multi-channel antilock braking system. The First airbag was installed in production vehicles in 1980. Centrally mounted third brake light became mandate in early 80s. In 1987 Traction control used to prevent loss of traction. In 90s, Volvo introduced side airbag. In 1991 Volvo created side impact collision system helps passenger protect against injury.

Car Airbag Burst

In 90s and early 21st century computer continue to provide great support to automotive industry. 1996 Kia Sportage added knee airbag feature which was located just below steering wheel to provide protection during crash. Same year rain sensing wipers were invented. Modern cars were fitted with computer inside it. Citroen developed an intelligent anti-skid system which helps driver a level of control while driving in ice and snow condition. Electronic stability control was invented by Mercedes Benz with help from Bosch. 2005 Lane departure warning feature was first used by Citroen. Automobile manufacturers keep on inventing new safety features like Blind spot monitoring system (20017), Autonomous breaking (2008), Pedestrian detection (2015) and V2V V2I Communication (2018). As technology is increasing less and less human intervention will be required. This is giving relaxed driving experience but also removes most unpredictable events on the roads.

In India ABS, Airbag and rear parking sensors has become mandatory fitment in car from in year 2019. Car manufacturers started installing ABS in all models after April’18. By 2022-23 Electronic stability control and autonomous emergency braking shall become mandatory fitment.

Why Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) are popular in India?

SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) is neither a sport vehicle nor a utility vehicle but a fancy name coined by an automotive manufacturer to lure an overpaid ambitious middle class who thinks they need a 2 ton vehicle to show off their success and rule the road. Currently compact and subcompact SUV forms are dominating the automobile market in India and sedan sales are continuously dropping.

SUV Aspiration

Cars are one of our most expensive possessions after home and despite there being so many different body types, makes and models, we still have our favorite dream car. In recent years, people’s old time favourite sedans are getting replaced by the big and bold SUVs. 15 to 20 Years ago people wanted the hottest new sports car and now want masculine SUV. Let’s understand why the cultural dynamic has changed.

SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) is neither a sport vehicle nor a utility vehicle but a fancy name coined by an automotive manufacturer to lure overpaid ambitious middle class who think they need a 2 ton vehicle to show off their success and rule the road. Currently compact and subcompact SUV forms are dominating the automobile market in India and sedan sales are continuously dropping.

Man Car Building

SUV prices have also dropped in recent years comparable to competing sedans. The lower price, comfort, go anywhere capability and more space have all helped the SUVs popularity fly. This shift is observed overseas as well. Consumer shift to buy bigger vehicles is more than welcome for auto industry. For OEMs selling SUVs is more profitable than selling midsize sedans. That’s the reason all major Auto manufacturers have jumped on SUV brand wagons. There are 38 SUVs launches currently in pipeline for the year 2021 in India. Premium car makers like Mercedes, BMW and Audi are expanding their SUVs manufacturing facility.

Most of the compact and subcompact SUVs are actually crossovers but still people are loving them. Let’s understand why Luxury Range Rover to Nissan Magnite SUVs are so popular in India?

Practical and Versatile

SUV Large Cargo

The silver line of an SUV is higher ground clearance. They are rugged and strong. The thirst for adventure is also gaining popularity. Bigger advantage SUVs have over sedans is ground clearance which means you don’t have to worry much about hitting the bottom of your car when you are driving around villages and off roads. SUVs are versatile when it comes to practical usage in day-to-day life. It can carry more cargo, it can move people, It gives you good visibility. Driver is sitting position is high to give a better view of the road. At night when lights are on; driver have a bigger broader view of the road. You can drive freely and it is a big selling point of an SUV. The option of versatility is huge.

Car enthusiasts hate this shift as they love more fun to drive and lower ground clearance cars.

Sporty

Porsche Cayenne Front

Today there are lots of stylish options available in the SUV market.  SUV Design has improved substantially. SUVs are no longer ugly and slow. In 2020 SUVs look masculine and they have attractive body lines.

Spacious and Roomy

Rear Passenger Seat of SUV

Spacious and roomy has been a huge development in SUV. Past 15 to 20 years, SUVs have become bigger, more spacious, and they have been able to accommodate more people and more cargo. 7 or 8 seater SUVs make SUVs a great mode of transportation as people mover. Many families enjoy road trips, intercity travel and want to carry everything with them. For those families, an SUV is the perfect vehicle that not only handles the daily commute but also performs well on highways. It is easy to transport stuff like groceries, equipment and supplies in an SUV because of its cargo space and shape.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Car Refueling

Today’s mid-size SUVs are faster than a sports car 20 years ago. Fuel efficiency has improved substantially for SUVs. Even if fuel prices rise in future automakers don’t foresee trends to swing back to normal small cars. Perhaps consumers will shift to more compact and fuel-efficient SUVs.

Safety

Big Car accident in City

If you are concerned with safety many of today’s compact and subcompact SUVs perform well in crash tests baring few exceptions. Be sure to check crash test scores from Global NCAP, Asian NCAP and ARAI online. SUVs have longer crumple zones and hence there will be less forces on passengers inside. The bulky design of SUVs may better protect passengers inside but its larger mass creates an increased danger for pedestrians and passengers in small cars.

It is of utmost import to understand how much cargo and passenger space you need. As well as road conditions if you need all wheel drive. Ultimately consumers need to decide whether they need such bulky not so environmentally friendly vehicles which are marketed as lifestyle choices.

Sedan Vs SUV

After home, buying a car is the second most expensive purchase you are going to make. If you are looking for a new car but with abundant choices; you don’t know how to begin and what to buy. For decades drivers have had the choice of Sedan and Hatchback but now a new segment is getting popular that is sub compact SUV or Crossover SUV and this segment is giving stiff competition to both premium hatchback and compact sedans.

Sedan Vs SUV

Last decade, 2010 to 2020, though Price of base variants of compact sedans were equal to crossover SUVs, they were sold like hot cakes and sedan sales had taken a serious dive. Thanks to its wide popularity and practicality.

Each car body style has its own pros and cons. No product is made for everybody. Let’s explore more in detail to find out which one is the best choice for you as per your needs. Here are the things you should consider.

Ride & Handling

Nissan Car Drifting

Easy manoeuvring is the one benefit that a sedan offers is much better than any car body type. Riding dynamics, steering and handlings is better for a sedan than SUV. Car performance is lighter and more aerodynamic. 0 to 100 reach for a sedan is much easier compared to SUVs. Sedans have longer wheelbase and they are wider too that allows stable, smoother and quieter driving experience. Navigating through rough roads is pretty much simpler in SUVs, having said that crossover SUVs have marginal increase in ground clearance compared to hatchback. Crossover SUVs have more alleviated levels of view that offer potential improved visibility. Driver has good all round visibility which feels like the driver is in control of the vehicle. SUVs are agile with a smaller turning radius. SUVs have smaller wheelbase compared to compact sedans. Most crossover SUVs only feature front wheel drive like sedan and no all wheel drive options.

Driving and Comfort

Sedan Car Front Seats

Sedans have much better driving comfort. Sedan cabin design is more driver focused while Crossover SUVs give a more airy feeling. Sedans offer more legroom while SUVs offer more headroom. Crossover SUVs offer a high riding position where foots are beneath while sedan foots are stretched out in front of you.

Road Presence

Black Audi Q7

SUVs are becoming Status symbol in India thanks to its muscular look. It gets respect on the road; small vehicles keep aside so that SUVs can have an easy way off because of its road presence. Though some crossover SUVs look like more hatch up vehicles than Sport Utility Vehicles.

Space

Skoda Octavia Open Boot

Dimensionally compact sedans have more wheelbase than crossover SUVs. Sedan wins the race for overall cargo capacity in terms of volume in litres but there is much more to it apart from numbers. Sedan boot space has certain limitations when loading bulky items due to its shape. SUVs allow much flexibility due to its two-box design; Folding seats configurations are easy to do and offer larger cargo space.

Safety

Car Airbag Burst

Sedans are safer as their center of gravity is lower. Sedan driving feels more under control and less tippy. In case of rear end collision, the three box design of the sedan provides better protection for second row occupants than crossover SUVs. Technology incorporated is way more advanced than that of SUVs for the same price. Sedan’s manoeuvring is easy at high speed though features like electronic stability control, traction control have made crossover SUVs more safer than before.

Not to forget, Sedan’s fuel economy ratings are better due to its aerodynamic design than compact SUV.

Crossovers SUVs are agile, peppy and fun to drive. Crossovers look attractive to the younger market while Enthusiast normally prefers the low sitting position of sedan. Sedan occupant feel lower to ground while crossover SUV features high driving position. Sedans are not as versatile as Crossover SUVs. My heart says SUVs because of road presence, passion, social status but my brain says Sedan as the driver comfort, the fuel efficiency and technology is good in a sedan. Buy a car that makes sense to you and not just emotionally excited.

Why Active Safety System is Overrated…………..is it really important?

Everybody is talking about active safety systems of passenger cars right from companies’ websites, sales representatives, automobile journalist, auto enthusiasts etc. Let’s understand what exactly an active safety measure is?

Car Seat Belt

Demand for automotive safety measures is increasing in emerging markets like India because of the changing norms of road safety, consumer awareness and increasing vehicle population. The demand is increasing on the back of rising risk of road fatalities and consumer demand.

In simple words; Active safety measures support drivers to prevent an accident. To my mind Active safety system is very important as it helps in collision avoidance and mitigation by providing advance warning or by providing the driver with additional assistance in steering/controlling the vehicle. Since the system remains active when a vehicle is moving hence it is called as active safety. Many active safety systems interpret singles from various sensors with the help of computers so as to support the driver to control the vehicle better.

Car Instrument Cluster

There are various other examples of active safety like Antilock Braking system, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Good Visibility of driver side, Low noise level in cabin, Clarity of instrument console and Warning symbols, Head–up display, Good handling, Good road grip, Chassis assist, Intelligent speed adaptation, Traction control, Collision warning and avoidance, Adaptive cruise control and Tire pressure monitoring are also considered as active safety systems.

In India;, features like Antilock Braking System and Electronic Brake Force Distribution are not restricted only to luxury cars; these features are now mandatory for all passenger cars.

Let’s see when India will surpass Europe safety norms.

Lets have a look at advanced Active safety features which are available currently only in luxury cars/SUVs.

Autonomous Emergency Braking(AEB)

Autonomous emergency Braking(AEB): AEB system provides warning to driver in case driver does not respond to avoid or minimize the impact of an accident and also helps with sufficient braking and ultimately stops the car to avoid collision. The AEB system can automatically detect a potential forward collision and assist the driver by providing a warning. The system then automatically activates the braking system to decelerate the vehicle to avoid collision.

Car Cruise Control Buttons

Adaptive Cruise Control(ACC)

The ACC system can automatically adjust vehicle speed to maintain safe distance between your car and from the vehicle ahead. System slows down or speeds up the vehicle automatically. Now days ACC systems are also linked with collision avoidance systems to alert the driver during emergency situations.

Blind Spot Monitoring System(BSMS)

BSMS automatically warns drivers during critical situations while changing lanes on freeways. Blind spot detection watches vehicles moving behind as well as both left and right of the driver. This system was initially developed by Volvo and used cameras to detect anything that was approaching the vehicle. Modern systems use radar that are placed in the rear bumper of cars. Some car manufacturers even use sensors that monitor rear surroundings of cars. When the driver turns on an indicator if an adjacent vehicle is approaching; system automatically shows a warning light either on A pillar or ORVM.

Car Lane Assist Signal in Side mirror

Lane Keep Assist

The Lane Keep Assist or lane departure warning system provides brief gentle inputs when driver’s unintentional drifting of lane. Warning does not occur when the driver intentionally turns the indicator on and turns steering for normal lane change. If the vehicle unintentionally enters another lane, the system activates a visual alert on the dashboard or an audible alert or vibration of a steering wheel.

Parking Assistant System

The parking assistance system can automatically park the car. The Park Assist system is one of the most advanced systems currently available in high end luxury cars. This system enable car to steer, accelerate and brake itself to park without any effort of the driver. This system can even judge adequate parking space. This system uses camera and sensors to analyze precise parking space. Some advance parking system can park automatically even when driver standing outside the vehicle. Some parking assist system uses multiple ultrasonic sensors placed front and back of the car. In some cars when vehicle is moving at less than 5 mile per hour if vehicle detect any object within 8 ft or 2.4 meters of proximity behind the vehicle and 4 ft or 1.2 meters front of vehicle the car rear speakers beeps. Beep intensity increase as vehicle move close to the object. Some vehicles even display warnings on their dashboards.

Car Parking System

Heads Up Display

A Heads-Up Display (HUD) provides a digital transparent navigation screen on the windshield that helps drivers keep focus on the road ahead. Head up display is a wide colour image that is projected by a special device on the dashboard. Information displayed by the HUD is very much similar to multi information displayed on the dashboard. The set up of lenses, mirror, windshield and other components make it seem like a floating cloud above the hood. The sole objective of HUD is to focus on the road ahead and minimize distraction of drivers while driving.

Facial Recognition Software

Luxury cars like Jaguar and Land Rover are equipped with more advanced technologies. System can sense the passengers are feeling hot and the car will automatically drop AC temperature or increase fan speed. System can detect the dizziness of the driver and can immediately sound the alert.

Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) Communications

V2V and V2I constantly broadcast information about cars like location and speed. The vehicles can wirelessly share information about position and speed data so as to prevent accidents. It can also help to ease traffic congestion and improve the environment. It could take a decade for more sophisticated V2V communications into life saving potential.
