The Legacy of Speed: A Look Back at Ford SVT

  • For many car enthusiasts, the letters “SVT” hold a special place. Standing for Special Vehicle Team, SVT was a performance division within Ford responsible for creating some of the most iconic and exciting vehicles in the brand’s history.

Birth of a Legend (1991):

Founded in 1991, SVT aimed to inject a dose of performance into Ford’s mainstream offerings. Their philosophy revolved around four key principles: Performance, Substance, Exclusivity, and Value. The first two vehicles to wear the SVT badge were the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and the 1993 SVT F-150 Lightning. These models instantly captured the attention of performance enthusiasts, offering significant power upgrades, improved handling, and unique visual cues compared to their standard counterparts.

A Decade of Dominance (1990s):

Throughout the 90s, SVT continued to churn out iconic vehicles. The Mustang Cobra R became a track monster, revered for its raw performance and limited production numbers. The SVT Contour surprised many with its sporty handling and impressive acceleration, offering a unique performance sedan option. Other notable additions included the SVT F-150 Lightning with its supercharged V8 engine and the SVT Focus, a hot hatch that delivered a thrilling driving experience in a compact package.

Beyond the Mustang (2000s):

While the Mustang remained a staple in the SVT lineup, the 2000s saw the team explore new territories. The SVT Lightning returned in 2001 with even more power, while the SVT F-150 Raptor emerged as a dominant off-road performer. The SVT Focus ST continued its legacy of offering a practical yet thrilling driving experience.

The End of an Era (2008):

Sadly, due to various factors including the financial crisis of 2008, Ford decided to disband the SVT division in 2008. However, the legacy of SVT lives on in the hearts of enthusiasts and the numerous performance models they created.

SVT’s impact on the automotive industry cannot be understated. They played a crucial role in reinvigorating Ford’s performance image and offering enthusiasts exciting alternatives to traditional muscle cars. Their vehicles continue to be sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, serving as a testament to the passion and dedication of the SVT team.

Even though the SVT chapter is closed, Ford Performance continues to carry the torch, delivering high-performance vehicles and pushing the boundaries of innovation. Aerodynamics Components of A Sports Car

Over the years there, you might have seen many changes in the Car design due to space requirements, legal restriction, best fuel economy and Power. Aerodynamics is an integral part of the car design process of both regular road cars as well as high end performance and race car design.

A moving car faces Air Resistance, gradient resistance and rolling resistance. Air resistance is resistance offered by the air to the moving object. It depends on several factors like shape, Size and Speed. Air resistance can be divided into two separate forces: drag and lift. The design of the vehicle should help to overcome these resistances. Engineers find many ways to minimize drag and lift force. Surrounding air always interacts with the car whether you are driving at slow speed or at high speed on highway or race track. At high speed you can quickly feel air resistance and also how car design is closely connected to handling at high speed. Airflow around the car is channelled; by using a rear spoiler, front air splitter that decreases lift. Lower the drag coefficient means better car performance. Wind tunnels are used to test the aerodynamics of the car.

Aerodynamics is the study of interaction between air and solid bodies moving through it. It has a tremendous effect on the way solid body cuts through walls of air. It defines car handling, performance and fuel economy. Aerodynamics evolved out of a combination of Physics, math and fluid dynamics.

Let’s understand how the aerodynamics component of the car helps to limit the air resistance, supply high pressure air to the engine for maximum output as well as helps in faster cooling of car brakes, intercooler and radiator.

Front Splitters

Many sports cars are low and close to the ground. There is a reason for it. Aerodynamic drag gets reduced if the frontal area of the car is low. When a car moves at high speed; air generates a high pressure zone and pushes the car backwards. The front splitter is placed below air dams. Front splitters are flat plates at front of the car that ensure the wind chips up and therefore keep the front of the car pushing downwards. It captures high pressure air and fragments it. This helps to generate downforce on the car.

Spoiler

Spoiler is also known as wings. Spoilers are placed on the rear of the car. The primary purpose of a car spoiler is to spoil unfavourable air movement. It’s an aerodynamic device, most often fitted to performance cars or sports cars. Spoiler pushes the car downwards. Spoiler is positioned high enough so they free oncoming air that does not create the turbulent air that is generated due to the geometry of the car.  Air streamlines travel above the car while some air streamlines travel below the car body. Streamlines above and beneath the car should form a laminar throughout the length of the car but in real life this doesn’t happen. In real life; the front Airflow has a laminar but the airflow turns into turbulence due to sudden decrease in rear of car shape where air pressure drops. A spoiler helps to maintain laminar airflow. Spoiler also reduces drag that helps in good mileage.  Spoiler helps to reduce vehicle lift which results in better traction control as well as better handling.

Scoops

Scoop is placed above the bonnet. Scoop forces airflow into the engine bay of the car if the car has a top mounted intercooler or radiator. It helps in faster cooling and better efficiency. Scoop also creates aerodynamic drag as it forces more air in the engine bay hence it is not a good choice to reduce drag as airflow comes from both front air dams as well as scoops.

Hood Vents

Some cars feature hood vents. When air comes inside from front air dams; it hits the radiator and goes through the radiator and then flows out through hood vents. Hot air flows out from the top. This helps improve downforce as air turbulence is not created since some air particles stagnate on the front of the car.

Front wheels of the car rotates at high velocity. That creates a high pressure zone. If that high pressure air is ventilated then that air colloids with incoming air and create further downforce.

Ducts help to keep brakes and engine components cool.

Side Skirts

Normally air slips underneath the car as the car gains speed. This wind creates drag and immensely affects car handling. Side Skirts restrict airflow entering underneath the car from sides which disrupts low pressure front. Side Skirts also improve car aesthetics.

Air curtains are small aerodynamic devices. Air flows through the air curtain then reaches the front wheel of the car and then flows out from vents at the back of the fender. It also releases turbulent air that exists between the back of the front wheel and fender walls. This turbulent air may create drag. Air curtains are drag resistance devices. You may find them in normal road cars like Hyundai i20 N. It helps to make the vehicle more aerodynamically efficient as it directs air flow across the wheel to reduce wind turbulence.

Diffuser

Diffuser is placed at the bottom of the car. Diffuser spreads airflow below the car and airflow releases beneath the car in a controlled way and this improves transition of airflow underneath the car. This can really accelerate air beneath the car and create a low pressure zone below the car.  It influences the car’s handling for example; it influences understeer or oversteer of the car.

Canards are also known as dive planes. It’s very important to have downforce in mid-engine cars. They help in forward balance of the car. Canards are actually small and make a small amount of downforce but canards help to create low pressure air underneath the car as the front splitter creates a high pressure region near the bumper. Hence proximity of canards and splitter is very important. You might have seen canards in GT race cars.

Air Dam

Air dam is an important aerodynamic part of your vehicle. Air dam is usually found at the bottom of the front grill of the car nose. Air dam ensures high pressure air should reach the engine. It directs airflow around the car instead of under it. The car will be more stable with an air dam when you drive at high speed. Air dam keeps the car nose pointed at the ground and keep it steady.  Air Dam helps improve airflow and decrease drag. It adds great aesthetic appeal to cars.

High performance tires have stiffer sidewalls that are reinforced with steel or Kevlar that reduces rolling of the tire when you make steering inputs and that transmit more motion through the steering wheel. They have directional asymmetrical tread pattern. Speed and sharp cornering is no problem with performance tires.  They can withstand higher temperature and give you maximum ability on tracks. High performance tire even reduces braking distance.

Suspension set up

Most people think suspensions are used for rider comfort which is not true but the role of suspension is to maintain constant contact with the road and ensure there is traction to move the car forward. Suspension is always tuned as per the road condition where the car will be driven. To get a better steering feel and handling characteristics, the car should have better suspension set up. Performance cars use stiff springs. Body roll and lean can be controlled with stiff suspension. Performance cars have low ground clearance for low center of gravity and hence low suspension travel. Maximum aerodynamic efficiency can be achieved with specific ride height. Stiffer suspension doesn’t change the height of the vehicle. Performance cars should ride at constant ride height and for that stiff suspension set up will help. Performance oriented vehicles like Hyundai N, Ford Fiesta RS are also being driven on tracks and tracks are smooth and don’t have any rough patches.

Braking should be more powerful than car speed, time to stop the car should be much lesser than time to accelerate the car. This stands true in the case of fun to drive cars. Fun to drive cars are made for outstanding performance out of the car whether on daily driving condition or on tracks and hence Performance cars should have high performance braking systems. Braking system, especially rotors, tends to get hot during harsh braking. Braking pads are designed for maximum performance in severe driving conditions. Braking pad compound is different in performance vehicles. There are many manufacturers like Brembo, Stoptech who manufacture performance braking components. Most people also prefer to do occasional track days, they need additional performance from the car hence the car should have improved braking. With fun to drive vehicles you drive a little faster and hence cars require brake upgrades.

Weight Distribution

When a car has perfect balance it massively improves the vehicles stability when cornering and it consistency of performance. Perfect weight balance is achieved when all four wheels of the vehicles is press down the road with exact amount of force. When a car has 50:50 weight distribution that means car has perfect handling. Weight distribution includes front and rear ratio, side by side ratio and cross weight ratio. Car weight always moves around its center of gravity When car is braking, Turning or even accelerating. The weight moves its direction of the car due to the suspension. When you turn the car to the right then weight moves to opposite direction and increase weight on left tires. When you drive straight and brake hard then front suspension is compressed and weight moves to front of the car. During sudden acceleration the rear of suspension compressed and weight moves to rear of the car this results in understeer of the car. Enthusiast cars have perfect weight balance that greatly improves the car handling.

Car reviewers always talk about horsepower per ton or power to weight ratio. Power to weight ratio is a vehicle’s ability to accelerate faster. Imagine a truck and a small car standing at a signal when the light turns green. Performance cars makes more power for its weight than regular cars. These cars have higher BHP per ton weight of the car. Most modern performance cars have small capacity turbo engines like Hyundai GDI Turbo or VW TSI turbo that makes more power per ton which reflect into solid performance on highways and tracks.

Everyday Sports Car: Hyundai N Performance

One of the things that sets the Hyundai N Cars apart is excitement and the thrill that drivers get when he/she is behind the steering wheel. N is the official name of Hyundai High performance vehicles division. Hyundai N brand is similar to BMW’s M, Mercedes AMG and Ford Performance.

Hyundai has an R & D Center at Namyang in South Korea and test center at Nurburgring in Germany hence the N stands for Namyang and Nurburgring. High performance N Models are being developed at these two locations. N logo symbolize chicane of a race track, a sharp bend created to form an obstacle on motor track or on a road where driving skills and the car balance are tried and tested which reflects N. It all started when Hyundai showcased Sports looking car in 1989. In February 1990 Hyundai Launched Scoupe which was the milestone of its first performance based vehicle. Later in the year 1996 Hyundai Tiburon was launched which was a sports coupe powered with 2.0 Litre beta Engine. Due to its stability and reliability, Tiburon received good response which led to the launch of Hyundai Tuscani which was powered with the most advanced technology of that time the all-new 2.7 Litre V6 delta engine. The success of Scoupe, Tiburon and Tuscani gave birth to Hyundai’s first Rear Wheel Drive sports Coupe Hyundai Genesis with better weight distribution. Hyundai began participating in WRC in the year 2014 after unveiling the Hyundai i20 N World Rally Championship concept at Paris Motor show in the year 2012. The Hyundai World Rally Team won its first Podium at the Mexico Rally. Hyundai started participating in high level motorsports activity Nurburgring 24-Hours Endurance race in 2016 with Hyundai i30N. Fuel efficient Driving Techniques for Highway

The fuel-efficient car is good for both the environment and your pocket. However, you should know your driving style because the most fuel-efficient cars can consume more fuel if it is driven incorrectly. We will discuss driving techniques in order to drive efficiently and get the best mileage of a car on the highway to help you save money on fuels during long distance travelling. As a driver you can change your driving habits in order to achieve better fuel economy. When you drive in a very saddle manner. You can even achieve the top mileage claim of the car.

It is quite obvious that if load lots of stuff in the boot or rear seat of your car, it will become heavy and consume more fuel but this is not new. Also never follow tractor or trailers for great aerodynamics. It’s a dangerous and silly idea. Here are the tips that will focus on practical aspect to get better fuel economy on highways.

Maintain Average Speed

Maintaining average speed on Highway doesn’t mean you should drive below 55 KMPH which is dangerous for other vehicles and also none of us have time for that. There is a major difference in fuel consumption, when you drive at 80 KMPH and at 90 KMPH. Simply reducing 10 KMPH will significantly increase fuel economy. When you drive at 90 KMPH the amount of power that car produces increases exponentially to overcome resistance. There are two resistances that cars need to overcome first is aerodynamics and second is rolling resistance in the tires. Cars need to produce more power to overcome these two resistances and hence fuel consumption will increase. Now let’s discuss the time to reach our destination. If you are required to travel 200 Kms; it takes 2 Hours and 30 minutes to reach your destination when you drive at a speed of 80 KMPH where it takes 2 Hours and 15 Minutes when you drive at 90 KMPH so there will be 15 minutes difference but you may save a significant amount of fuel.

In modern cars if you let your foot off the throttle and you leave transmission in gear the engine does not inject fuel. You can take advantage of this in different scenarios like approaching traffic signals, approaching a turn ahead.

Don’t keep on accelerating the car when you are driving on twist and turns. It’s better to look ahead of the road. If you can see turn ahead and after some time you anticipate that you need to apply brakes in that situation, always release the accelerator throttle much before the turn. Car will coast. Don’t press the clutch pedal and free the engine in this situation, clutch wear will be more. When you reach the turn and you apply brakes but you are not doing any harsh braking and also you are not using too much fuel while decelerating.

When you drive on the highway, upshift gears when the tachometer is close to the 2000 mark. When you cross the 2000 RPM band you are in a good torque band and you can upshift gear smoothly. In this torque band; car engine can easily shift to top gears and within a few 100 meters you can reach 6th gear. Always maintain speed at 80 KMPH that will not put much stress on the engine and you will get better fuel efficiency. When you change the gears at 2000 RPM mark there will be less engine noise in the cabin and you will feel comfortable during a long-distance journey.

When elevation changes, the rule is very clear and simple: maintain a constant speed of 40 or 50 KMPH. When elevation changes and you try to maintain constant speed at different elevations, cars will consume more fuel. In normal driving conditions, when you go up the hill you press the accelerator to maintain constant speed and when you come down you use brakes to maintain that speed. There is wastage of energy. In such a scenario, you can take advantage of gravity. The alternative during driving on difference in elevation is when driving up a hill release accelerator in this scenario, you are using engine braking. When you start downhill, press light acceleration and gravity helps you back up the speed. This is the more efficient way of driving over an elevation change. Second advantage of this technique is putting the heat from decelerating into your engine cooling system which is far more capable. It can take a ton of heat versus putting that heat into the brakes so brakes won’t overheat and need replacement of the brake pad.

Never mess with a car’s aerodynamics. People place oversize items on the car roof that will increase drag and ultimately lead to higher fuel consumption.

#2 इंजन तुरंत बंद न करें

लंबी ड्राइव के बाद या फिर  यदि आप अपनी कार को उच्च आरपीएम पर चला रहे हैं तो तुरंत कार का  इंजन बंद न करें। जब आप अपनी कार को उच्च आरपीएम पर चलाते हैं, तो टर्बो चार्जर वास्तव में गर्म हो जाता है और जब आप इंजन बंद करते हैं, तो इंजन आयल का प्रवाह तुरंत बंद हो जाता है। टर्बोचार्जर उच्च गति पर घूमते हैं और जब इंजन आयल का  संचरण बंद हो जाता है; इंजन आयल संचरण के बिना टर्बो स्पिन हो रहा होता है  जो टर्बोचार्जर को नुकसान पहुंचाएगा अंततः कार की परफॉरमेंस को प्रभावित करेगा । दूसरा नुकसान  यह है कि इंजन आयल पूरी तरह से स्थिर नहीं है होता और यह टर्बोचार्जर के गर्म क्षेत्रों पर बैठता है और यह ब्रेक होने लगता है जिससे एक गाढ़ा आयल रह जाता है।  गाढ़े आयल में अच्छा प्रवाह नहीं हो पता जो फिर से टर्बो चार्जर्स को नुकसान पहुँचा सकता है । इसलिए आपको बार-बार आयल बदलने की जरूरत पड़ेगी । अपने इंजन को हमेशा ३० से ६० सेकंड के लिए ठंडा होने दें, इंजन आयल को स्थिर होने दे ताकि उसका तापमान घट जाएँ । इंजन बंद करने से पहले अपनी कार को ३० सेकंड से एक मिनट तक आयडलिंग पर रखने की अनुशंसा की जाती है।

#3 इंजन लग न करें और एलएसपीआई (लो स्पीड प्री-इग्निशन) से बचे

#4 हमेशा सबसे अच्छा ईंधन खरीदें

How To Keep Your Turbocharged Car Reliable

Turbo charged diesel engines are not new; they have been part of our life for a decade. Most diesel engines nowadays are turbocharged, the reason is simple for efficiency and Power.

In the year 2021, A new trend has started that is turbocharged petrol engines. Turbo charged petrol engines are exciting and hopefully they may bring motor culture in India. In this article let’s talk about how to keep your turbo car reliable. Here are a few tips and tricks which you can use to protect your turbocharged car.

#1 Avoid initial revving in turbo Cars

When you start a turbocharged car cold, do not race the engine hard. First allow the engine to warm up for five to ten seconds until your car gets up to operating temperature so that the oil starts flowing through the turbos. Engine oil has to circulate through the oil pan and need to heat up. If oil doesn’t reach operating temperatures, it will not flow as fast as it will at operating temperature. Oil is thick, when you cold start the car. It won’t circulate through engine and turbo properly. When oil is heated up, engine oil becomes thin and it will circulate through engine faster. Thinner oil provides better protection to turbo chargers. Turbochargers spin insanely high RPMs hence you need to make sure proper oil flows through engine and turbo chargers. When turbocharger and engine is not lubricated with oil then revving hard after cold start may damage your engine and turbo faster. Always wait for five to ten minutes, allow engine to warm up and then you can rev it to full power.

Never immediately turn your engine off after a long drive or if you have been driving your car at high RPM.  When you drive your car at higher RPMs, the turbo charger gets really hot and when you turn off the engine, oil flow stops immediately. Turbochargers spin at higher speeds and when oil circulation stops; turbo spins without oil circulation which will harm turbocharger ultimately affects the car performance. Second drawback is oil doesn’t settle and it sits on the hot areas of turbochargers and it starts breaking down those leaves behind a thicker oil. Thicker oil does not have good flow characteristics which will again harm turbo chargers. Hence you need to change oil more frequently. Always let your engine cool down for 30 to 60 seconds, let engine oil drop down temperature and cool off hot areas of turbocharger. It is strongly recommended to keep your car on idle for 30 seconds to a minute before turning off the engine.

#3 Engine Lugging and LSPI (Low Speed Pre-ignition)

Never lug the engine. Let’s say you are in fifth gear at 1000 to 1500 rpm and you press the throttle for immediate boost. This is a very dangerous situation. There are several reasons; why you should avoid engine lugging. When you press the accelerator at low speed, engine will inject more fuel to cylinders but it can’t ingest more air so as a result you inject more fuel but it will not burn completely and this partial burn fuel goes through your exhaust system and it harms catalytic converter and damage exhaust system of car. Many times you see black smoke; that black smoke is a result of this condition where you are at low engine and put a high engine load. Another most important reason is Low speed Pre-Ignition which actually damages car engines. It may even seize the engine. In small capacity turbocharged engines high load and low rpm conditions actually have ignition far earlier than spark plug ignites. Ignition is not happening in a controlled manner. This situation can damage your car engine significantly. It may damage piston rings, spark plugs etc. Hence always shift to lower gear before harsh acceleration.

#4 Always buy best fuel

If you have a small capacity turbo charge car, always buy the best fuel for your car. This will avoid scenarios like low-speed pre-ignition that significantly damages the engine. When you use high octane fuel, ignition happens in more controlled manner which minimizes knock.

#5 Neutral Slip Angle

Let’s understand slip angle first, slip angle is the angle between the direction in which the vehicle is actually travelling and the direction in which the wheel is pointing. Stable vehicle means the front tire and rear tire have the same slip angle. In case one of them is greater than the other; let’s say the front is greater than the rear then the car will understeer and if the rear is greater than the front then the car will oversteer. So why is it important to understand slip angle for turbocharged vehicles? In a turbocharged vehicle if you are coming out of a corner and if you accelerate hard or if you brake hard where you are increasing the slip angle of a tire. In a turbocharged vehicle when you are coming out of a corner and you press accelerator hard, there is turbo lag and then all of a sudden turbo lag is overcome and all power sent to the rear or front wheel. This scenario puts a significant load on the tires. If you have a rear wheel drive vehicle then you are putting load on the rear wheel which greatly increases the rear wheel slip angle which means rear tires slip angle is greater than the front tires. Ultimately the car will oversteer. Similarly, if you have a front wheel drive vehicle, the front wheel will slip and the car will understeer during cornering. These are dangerous conditions with turbo charged vehicles. Hence you need to be careful while cornering with turbo cars otherwise car will slide in uncontrolled manner.

#6 Engine Oil

Use high quality engine oil for your turbo charged vehicle. Generally, car manufacturers recommend synthetic oil for turbocharged vehicles. Since turbocharger uses hot exhaust gases to spin, it gets super-hot and hence synthetic oil works better in turbocharged vehicles. We still recommend reading the owner’s manual and use engine oil that is recommended by the car manufacturer.

#7 Better Fuel Economy

You should ensure flashers and fog lights are working properly. Do not forget to check number plate light bulbs. While you depress the brake pedal; you can ask your friend to check from behind or you can set a mobile phone or mirror to make sure that all of your brake lights are working. After checking brake lights, shift the car in reverse and check reverse lights. Get familiar with all headlight switches if you have rented the self-driven car.

You may get stranded, if belts get damaged. If you notice any cracks or any pieces of missing ribs, replace the belt immediately. Batter can screw your road trip. You may leave your home with a working battery but all of sudden during the drive, you may notice the battery is getting drained because it was not getting charged. To avoid such a situation, you should inspect the battery terminal. If you notice any corrosion on battery terminals that reduces the ability of a charge. You can use a mixture of baking soda and water and toothpaste to scrub away and neutralize all acidic build up and then clean it up with paper towels and some water. Visit a nearby battery shop and check the health of your car battery with a battery tester and then you can check your battery’s current charge percent. After all checks, you can start your car and also run a test on how the alternator is charging.
